Public Humiliation free essay sample

The idea that public shaming can psychologically induce and change criminals to improve their behaviour is apt to result in the opposite. It is highly unlikely that someone who has been publically humiliated would reform their ways. This kind of punishment can damage the victims psychologically, scarring them for life. The offenders may also develop feelings of resentment, defiance, anger, low self-esteem and/ or alienation. Becoming socially disgraced by one’s own community could lead to devastating consequences such as suicide. It is also probable that shame punishment actually overlooks the real problem  and does not address the real issue or  motivation behind an offense. What if a person who stole did so due to a drug problem? And should the law take emotions into consideration? Also, public humiliation would not work if the offender just did not care how others sees and thinks about them. Even if the criminals do change their behaviour and reform their ways, the public will not be welcoming because their reputation is broken. We will write a custom essay sample on Public Humiliation or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Public humiliation can negatively affect the public and the community. Suppose a man is walking with a sign that says that he killed a family of four while driving drunk and is confronted by mob of angry friends of the victims. He will likely get beaten up on the spot. In this case, most people would not see that the criminal has been sufficiently punished for their stupidity of drunk driving and would demand further penalization. The city’s reputation can be ruined if visitors see criminals on the streets. Putting them on our streets is also dangerous and requires a lot of guards to ensure the criminal will not escape. These problems are avoidable if the criminal was thrown in jail instead. Public shaming can hurt innocent people such as the relatives and children of the offenders. Their familial reputation would be ruined and though they might be a good citizen, they would be ridiculed and scorned by the public. There was even a news article published about a man who was seeking to challenge his ongoing shaming punishment because it had endangered his kids in school. The As a form of cruel and unusual punishment, public humiliation was used the most during the past, in the Middle Ages, etc. When I think about public shaming personally, I think about whipping, the use of pillories, and branding. However, in the modern society, we do not use these acts anymore as we recognize the cruelty in these acts. The use of public humiliation was much more infrequent in the 20th century than it was in the 1800s. Time for public punishments has probably already come and gone. People are different now in their way of thinking. As cited in the Constitutional Act of 1982, under Part 1: Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Section 12, â€Å"Everyone has the right not to be subjected to any cruel and unusual treatment or punishment. † This part of the Canadian Constitution clearly shows how we now believe in doing what is fair and just. There are criminals out there who need to be punished, and many should be in prison. But the suggestion that prisons or public humiliation are the only choices is false. Other alternatives exist, for example: A bully who threatens an interracial couple can be required to watch civil rights movies. These educative punishments can be a useful supplement to, or substitute for incarceration or other forms of punishment, such as boot camps, community service or house arrest. There are many alternate sort of punishment that can be used and have less of a negative psychological and emotional impact than public shaming.

Satyricon Essay Example

Satyricon Essay Example Satyricon Essay Satyricon Essay The Satyricon, like many other works written in the time of early Ancient Rome, is a narrative whose author is not known definitively. However, the best candidate from the time was Titus Petronius (Arbiter). The story, looking especially from the scene â€Å"Dinner with Trimalchio,† is a satiric masterwork of the pragmatic and materialistic attitude of the time, soon to be replaced by Christianity. â€Å"Dinner with Trimalchio† tells a tale from the perspective of Encolpius, a vagabond student of the master Agamemnon, who is invited along as a pupil of Agamemnon to a banquet. The host of the banquet is Gaius Trimalchio, who was once a slave but now a freedman millionaire, who worked hard to attain his power and wealthy status. Trimalchio is known for throwing elegant and overly extravagant dinner parties complete with exotic foods and fine wines. This banquet, however, takes a turn for the worst when Trimalchio, who is superstitious and very obsessed with his own death, begins describing in detail his tomb in which he will be buried, which is overly grandiose, and even goes as far as bringing out his will. Quickly the dinner party turns into a drunken circus, eventually coming to a conclusion after the guests, solely to tickle his fancy, act out Trimalchio’s funeral. ?I believe, in discord with critic John Wright, that Petronius in fact had a moral purpose for writing The Satyricon. Furthermore, I feel that there are underlying cultural traits that support ideas of divisions of social classes, the value of education, and the love of material wealth. Because Petronius colloquially writes about serious topics including exposing blindness to spiritual values, distrust of the intellect, and preoccupation with the awareness of being cheated by one’s neighbor, some critics do not accept that he is writing on a much more incisive level. ? Petronius, in my opinion, wrote The Satyricon as a call for change in Roman society. Through his satirical writing, he specifically harps on the cultural traits of the time. For example, the man-centered society seems to be unjust and unequal for the women of the social order. Classical gender roles make the women behave as if they are second-class citizens, being grateful to be in the presence of a powerful male figure; where in actuality, Fortunata, Trimalchio’s wife, sold her jewelry to finance Trimalchio’s first wine selling business, which is how he made his millions. Without the help and generosity of Fortunata, Trimalchio would, himself, be a second-class citizen who struggles to pay for daily bread, like most of the poor lower-class Romans.? Another way Petronius exemplifies his purpose of writing this story is showing the importance of education in ancient Rome during the time, and how the culture valued it so much. Agamemnon, the scholarly teacher and friend of Trimalchio, is very well respected by the populace of the story. There is one passage in particular where Trimalchio tries to spark a conversation with Agamemnon about the stores of Hercules and Ulysses wherein Trimalchio makes obvious to Agamemnon that he is not well read in Homer’s literature, yet pretends to be. Trimalchio questions, ? â€Å"Do you remember the twelve labours of Hercules and the story of Ulysses- how the Cyclops tore out his thumb with a pair of pincers. I used to read about them in Homer, when I was a boy. In fact I actually saw the Sibyl at Cumae with my own eyes dangling in a bottle. †? This unintelligent miscue may not be noticed amongst the banquets’ crowd of guests, but among the educated individuals familiar with Homer’s work who will later reflect on the satirical comedy of the situation.? Perhaps one of Petronius’ most important reasons for writing The Satyricon is to show the evilness behind coveting material things and worshiping false idols. Trimalchio’s love for money and material wealth makes him stand out in the city, but as suggested by Petronius, for the wrong reasons. His taste for fine wines and glamorous cuisine at the lavish parties he throws- mainly to show off his great prosperity- is particularly revolting thought, knowing Trimalchio could easily share his riches with the hungry and suffering people of his city. Trimalchio does not know any god other than Mercury, the patron of business operations. He has dedicated a gold bracelet, worth one tenth of his total savings, to Mercury’s honor; but instead of depositing it into a shrine of the god, he wears it on his arm. Clearly Trimalchio is not humbled by the great fortune with which he is blessed. Petronius’ remarkable argument is that people, if fortunate enough to be as prosperous as Trimalchio, should not invest their savings in materialistic things and live o nicely, yet they should give back to those in need; for the true treasures in life are not made of gold and silver, it is more important to be spiritually rich. ? As for not having a moral purpose for writing such a profound satirical piece, I cannot agree with the critics. I accept the idea that Petronius was using this work as a tool for individuals to better themselves in cultural ways of thinking, the acceptance of others, and grow introspectively with consideration of the ideals of humility.

The World of Cyberspace and its Effects on Social Relationships Many studies have been conducted on the various features of cyberspace, its connection to social media, and how it influences professional, intimate, and cordial relationships. Although many spectators are convinced that society’s frequent use of cyberspace has taken a turn down the wrong path, cyberspace has opened up many opportunities for professional relationships to establish, such as the relationship between Facebook usage and an increase in work values in Taiwan (Lin, Le, Khalil, & Cheng, 2012). However, contradictory results suggest that heavy use of the internet by young children, specifically adolescent girls, may be a factor of negative social well-being (Pea et al., 2012). In order to fully understand how social cyberspace affects everyday relationships, all forms of interactions must be examined. This paper will examine the positive and negative effects of cyberspace connections and whether they should be utilized and in what manner. Primary Issues Cyberspace Cyberspace is a time-dependent set of interconnected information systems and the human users that interact with these systems (Ottis & Lorents, 2010). In recent years the term â€Å"cyberspace† has been used to explain things that pertain to any type of network system and anything to do with the use of computer technology. However, given the frequent use of cyberspace and its different qualities that people use daily, human relationships are affected by the information systems. The everyday use of cyberspace has changed the way in which social identity, social interaction, and relationship formation is formed differently online than in real life (McKenna & Bargh, 2000). Cyberspace has affected the way ... ...various businesses. Social media is now used in order to recruit and hire employees for different companies. For instance, the social media site, LinkedIn, has many social profiles of individuals that are thrown in a candidate pool for different jobs. Many recruiters can find their ideal candidate by searching for key terms that may match individual’s background or show up on their personal profile (Blacksmith & Poeppelman, 2013). Although this process may make it easier for recruiters to scout potential employees, the method has its limitations. Recruiters are basing their decisions off of information provided by the unknown individuals, information that could potential be false. Also, other trivial things, like people not updating their profiles or revealing photographs of themselves that are accurate may influence the recruiter’s decision to hire someone or not.

Poor European and African-American Settlers

Another educational issue that the author focuses on is the influx of poor European and African-American settlers to the community and its school system. The first influx of â€Å"European immigrants to the United States came mainly from norther Europe—England, Scotland, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Germany† (Ornstein, A. C., Levine, D. U., Gutek, G. L., & Vocke, D. E., 2017). This resulted in overcrowded schools due to the large number of students added to the school system. To accommodate these new students the school system introduced a series of innovative programs such as kindergartens, all-year schools, summer school, vocational and trade programs at secondary schools, and continuation and evening schools. In addition, â€Å"between 1880 and 1917, 44 new school buildings were built, and 76 additions† (Anyon, 1997). Nonetheless, these new immigrant students were non-English speakers and the instructors were not prepared to teach them. Consequently, these students were put in classrooms with educators that did not care for them or their education. Despite the push for improvements â€Å"the majority never went past fifth grade† (Anyon, 1997) and â€Å"the large percentages of the immigrant poor who attended school failed in their studies† (Anyon, 1997). Additionally, between 1920 and 1940, there was an influx of African-Americans who â€Å"arrived in search of work and freedom from southern Jim Crow segregation laws† (Anyon, 1997), but instead found discrimination, low-paying jobs, unfavorable living conditions, and segregation, which resulted in the redlining. Because of the Great Depression educational reforms, in Newark, were limited to â€Å"white middle-class areas of the city† (Anyon, 1997). Failure to provide fair educational reform resulted in students studying in poorly maintained schools; students high retention and failure rates; students being below grade level; and students being unprepared to earn a living. These were â€Å"unfortunate consequences for the education of African-American children and, as we shall see, would continue to do so for generations to come† (Anyon, 1997).

buy custom Social Networking Sites essay

buy custom Social Networking Sites essay The advancements of technology have provided great opportunities, but has also brought a shift from the way we live. Social networking sites are the recent buzz on the internet. The debate on whether social networks are causing more harm than good to the society continues to be a debatable issue, which still has no clear answer. Nevertheless, what is evident is that their availability and usage continues to rise with every day. Similarly to other developments brought by technology, social network such as Twitter, Facebook, Linked In and My Space have their pluses and minuses. Any technology, despite its shortcomings, should improve the lives of people. Can we say the same about social networks? It is true that communication has improved, and so is contact with friends, and we should never forget some that people have found love through these sites. As for the corporate world this is a great avenue for advertising. There is a lot of information that can be shared through these avenues within a short time, especially breaking news. For example, the news on the death of a celebrity spreads like wild fire courtesy in the social networks. However, sometimes the sharing of information becomes dangerous through abuse and potential abuses of these sites. For example, there has been reported suicide cases linked to use of social networking sites. A recent case of a suicide of a teenage girl who was maliciously attacked through words by her friends mother is just one of the examples of how sharing of information through these social networks can be misused or mismanaged and lead to suicide. By posting information/comments on Facebook, creating profiles, posting videos, all this is a great way of people honing their identities and promoting development, especially among the young people. Findings have shown that this practice is helpful in developing the skills that are important in 21st century. In this way, we can point out and say that social sites have been creating positive attitude towards adoption and usage of technologies. Nevertheless, are not people misusing these avenues? Are they all that we think? People are addicted to these sites leading to wastage of time that was meant for other constructive activities. In recent times, people have lost the true meaning of addition and are taking it casually, especially when it comes to spending time in front of a computer, tweeting or facebooking. People are spending more and more time on the internet and are even getting into trouble because of it. According to a research by Nucleus Research in Boston, users of social networks are spending up to two hours on the site, yet they should be working. The result of this behavior is a loss of 1.5 percent of total office productivity. Some have even withdrawn from personal contact and destroyed the healthy attachment that comes with face-to-face contact, social meetings and gatherings. There is no clear cut-line that shows whether social networks are harmful or if they are good to the society. Notably, social technologies can never have absolute positive or negative effects. That is why it is very hard to answer such a question. To move forward we should limit their harmfulness and so that we reap benefits. There are challenges that need to be worked on so that we can enhance the benefits. To improve on their usage and limit their harm, we will need to construct strong privacy connections for users and increase safety issues, increase commercialization of this space, and in this way we will work around the risks posed by social sites. John Alden Jr. and the Salem Witch Trials

John Alden Jr. and the Salem Witch Trials John Alden Jr. (1626 or 1627 - March 25, 1702) was a soldier and sailor accused of witchcraft on a visit to the town of Salem and imprisoned in the 1692  Salem witch trials; he escaped from jail and was later exonerated. John Alden Jr.s Parents and Wife Father: John Alden Sr., a crew member on the Mayflower when it sailed to Plymouth Colony; he decided to stay in the new world. He lived until about 1680. Mother: Priscilla Mullins Alden, whose family and brother Joseph died during the first winter in Plymouth; her only other relatives, including a brother and sister, had remained in England. She lived until after 1650, and possibly until the 1670s. John Alden and Priscilla Mullins were married in 1621, probably the second or third couple among the colonists to marry in Plymouth. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in 1858 wrote The Courtship of Miles Standish, based on a family tradition about the couple’s relationship. Recent evidence suggests that the story may be based on fact. Priscilla and John Alden had ten children who lived past infancy. One of the two eldest was John Jr.; he and the other two eldest children were born in Plymouth. The others were born after the family moved to Duxbury, Massachusetts. John Alden Jr. married Elizabeth Phillips Everill in 1660. They had fourteen children together. John Alden Jr. Before the Salem Witch Trials John Alden had been a sea captain and a Boston merchant before he became involved in the events in Salem in 1692. In Boston, he was a charter member of the Old South Meeting House. During King William’s War (1689 – 1697), John Alden held a military command, while he also maintained his business dealings in Boston. John Alden Jr. and the Salem Witch Trials In February 1692, at about the time that the first girls were displaying their symptoms of affliction in Salem, John Alden Jr. was in Quebec, ransoming British prisoners held there after their capture in the raid on York, Maine, in January. In that attack, a group of Abenaki, led by Madockawando and a French priest, attacked the town of York. (York is now in Maine and was at the time part of the Province of Massachusetts.) The raid killed about 100 English settlers and another 80 were taken hostage, forced to march to New France. Alden was in Quebec to pay the ransom for the freedom of the British soldiers captured in that raid. Alden stopped in Salem on his return to Boston. There had already been rumors that he was, through his business, supplying the French and Abenaki side of the war. There had also apparently been rumors of Alden having affairs with Indian women, and even having children by them. On May 19, a rumor came to Boston through some escapees from the Indians that a French leader had been looking for Captain Alden, saying Alden owed him some goods that he had promised to him. This may have been the trigger for the accusations that followed just days later. (Mercy Lewis, one of the accusers, had lost her parents in Indian raids.) On May 28, a formal accusation of witchcraft- â€Å"cruelly torturing and afflicting several of their Children and others†- against John Alden was filed. On May 31, he was brought from Boston and examined in court by Judges Gedney, Corwin and Hathorne. The court decided to put Alden, and a woman named Sarah Rice, into Boston jail, and instructed the keeper of the prison in Boston to hold him. He was delivered there, but after fifteen weeks, he made an escape from the jail and went to New York to stay with protectors. In December 1692, a court demanded that he appear in Boston to answer charges. In April 1693, John Hathorne and Jonathan Curwin were notified that Alden had been returned to Boston to answer at the Boston Superior Court. But no one appeared against him, and he was cleared by proclamation. Alden published his own account of his involvement in the trials (see excerpts above). John Alden died on March 25, 1702, in Massachusetts Bay province. John Alden Jr. in  Salem, 2014 series John Alden’s appearance during the Salem witch trials has been highly fictionalized in a 2014 series about the events in Salem.  He plays a man much younger than the historical John Alden was, and he is romantically linked in the fictional account to Mary Sibley, though this has no basis in the historical record, with intimations that this was his â€Å"first love.† (The historical John Alden had been married for 32 years and had fourteen children.)

Approaches for System Building in Digital Firm Era Essay

Approaches for System Building in Digital Firm Era - Essay Example The builders of system have to understand the impact of system change on organization and its processes as a whole. Generally, there are four kinds of system changes such as automation, shifts in paradigm, redesigning of business processes and rationalization. In any kind of systems development, there are six types of core activities that are vital for system effective building i.e. system analysis i.e. study and analysis of any problem or problems of existing systems along with requirements for solutions; system design i.e. information system solution specification which shows the way in which technical and organizational components will get integrated; programming i.e. making program of the system; testing the system; converting system if there is any kind of need for modification; production of final system for organization and maintenance of system so it functions smoothly and efficiently. Approaches for system-building in digital firms In modeling and designing information syste ms, two methodologies are used i.e. structured and object-oriented. In structured methodology, focus is on data and modeling processes separately; whereas, in object-oriented methodology, a model is viewed as a system in which a collection of objects bring together data and modeling processes. There are numerous methods of building systems that can be used by organizations. The four most common approaches used for system building are traditional system life cycle, prototyping, end-user development and Application Software packages and outsourcing (Oxford Economics, 2009). The oldest method is traditional systems life cycle in which systems are developed following formal stages; system building process proceeds to the next stage only after previous stage’s output is achieved. In prototyping, experimental systems are built rapidly and these systems are comparatively cheaper to other systems; they allow the end users to interact with the systems and evaluate their effectiveness. End-user development approach allows end users to develop information systems either on their own or by taking some help from specialists of information systems. Application software packages and outsourcing implies letting third parties develop information systems for the organizations; although this approach is relatively expensive but the systems developed under this approach are compatible with digital firm requirements from every aspect. Two approaches suitable for digital firm The two approaches most suitable for digital firms are prototyping and application software packages and outsourcing. Both these approaches help technology advanced organizations to successfully prosper within the digital industry as they allow the end users to easily interact and use the features of digital technology. In prototyping system building approach, a specific interactive system is designed which builds a model of a system to determine requirements of system. The primary aim of prototyping is to build an experimental system that is quick and inexpensive one for demonstrating and evaluating the users need for information requirements. The preliminary model of system or its important parts are built
